Eryca Freemantle

Award-winning Celebrity Make-Up Artist shares how bullying drove her to succeed and never give up

Before having her career, Eryca was bullied at school and told she would never amount to anything.

For many years she believed this. She lived her life in this negative mind set. Eryca has been in the fashion, beauty and make up industry industry for over 25 years. Firstly as a model, then a makeup artist and fitness specialist, which later progressed into her being labelled as an international makeup artist and wellness specialist. Her career started by sheer accident, she was involved in a near fatal car accident causing over multiple scars to her face, loss of hair and a near amputation of her left leg. Her positive attitude towards life encouraged her determination to proceed and be successful.

This motivated her to learn about corrective make-up techniques and application to camouflage her facial scars and blemishes, and fitness. It was her motivation that gave her the courage to embrace her beauty and at a time of such low self esteem. She had to make and design her own make up, for herself, to disguise her scarred face. Eryca has researched the makeup artist industry intensely, travelling the globe, looking at trends and predictions. Through her research she was able to identify that she had something unique and very much in demand to offer, slightly more than the average makeup artist. She had specialist industry knowledge combined with traumatic experiences, which is why she is known as a “survivor.”

She sits on the board of Panel of Experts at London College of Fashion, one of the most prestigious establishments in the world. She is an ambassador for Mark your Mark enterprise competition and a member of Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW). The industry loves her glamorous approach to fashion, photography, beauty and corrective make up, she is an acclaimed specialist and is commended by her colleagues in the industry all over the world. She is an industry expert handpicked for Virgin Media Pioneers.

Now an acclaimed make-up artist and Industry Expert she has an amazing and inspirational story to tell. Eryca’s words of wisdom, experience and expertise, have touched and changed the lives of many.

"The students were so attentive and they were touched by what you had to say. I spoke to a few of the students afterwards and they really liked your talk. It does show the extent and the impact that bullying can have in somewhat's life. Thank you for sharing your personal story with us. I very much hope we will be able to have you next year to talk to some other students."

It was a great pleasure to meet you and I learned a lot from our discussion. The purpose of these meetings is to create a dialogue between Government and the women's sector and to ensure we are kept informed about issues that are of concern to women. My specific aim for this event was to seek your views on the issues affecting women around body confidence and identify ways in which women can be supported to raise their body confidence and aspirations. I was very pleased by the depth and quality of of our lively discussion and I would like to thank you for providing your individual experience and insights."

"Eryca was absolutely brilliant with the students, here at Chosen Hill School, yesterday. Her talk was inspirational and had a profound affect on a number of our students. She also stayed behind to engage with a few students that have been bullied and they left beaming - so happy that they could talk to a kindred spirit and have first-hand proof that bullies don't win. "
