Beyond Fear: What AI is really doing to young people ( and to us all) and how to manage it and even thrive with it

Dr Agnieszka Piotrowska is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, trained psychologist, educator and international speaker whose work explores artificial intelligence, intimacy and human relationships. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the author of AI Intimacy and Psychoanalysis, published by Routledge.

Agnieszka has delivered two TEDx talks and spoken at major academic, cultural and professional events internationally, including a keynote for approximately 1,000 delegates at the IAPP AI Governance Global conference in Dublin. She has also appeared on the BBC, Sky News and Times Radio. Her speaking style combines serious expertise with storytelling, film, popular culture and accessible real-world examples.
Her school sessions examine how conversational AI is changing learning, creativity, relationships and young people’s emotional lives. Rather than approaching AI through moral panic or presenting it simply as another classroom tool, she helps students understand why systems such as ChatGPT can feel intelligent, responsive and personal. Her talks explore companionship, privacy, misinformation, emotional dependence and the importance of recognising when AI begins to replace rather than support human connection.

Her student talk, Something Real Is Happening, gives young people a language for experiences many are already having but rarely discuss. Her staff session, Beyond the Ban, considers AI as a safeguarding and relational issue as well as a question of academic integrity. It explores why prohibition alone is unlikely to work and how teachers can begin sensitive conversations without judgement or alarm.

Sessions can be delivered as assemblies, interactive workshops, staff CPD or a combined whole-school AI day. Her approach is psychologically informed, practical and hopeful.

Testimonials from Teachers

“Agnieszka’s work is critical in this AI moment. She reminds us that the emotional and relational dimensions of AI are complex and insufficiently understood. Her voice is an important call to action for all AI governance professionals. As our closing keynote speaker at the IAPP AI Governance Europe 2026 conference in Dublin, Agnieszka was engaging, passionate and funny.”

– J. Trevor Hughes, President & CEO, IAPP

"Agnieszka is an engaging, energising and highly original speaker. Her thinking on AI, human relationships and the future is innovative, thought-provoking and often unexpected. Audiences respond extremely well to both the substance of her ideas and the warmth and confidence with which she communicates them. She has a real ability to make complex questions feel vivid, accessible and relevant, and I would warmly recommend her as a speaker."

– Gaëlle Deschamps, CEO G-Force, Event Organiser TED Vezins

"I have learnt that there are two types of leaders: those who tell you where to go, and those who show you the way, walk ahead of you, and then walk alongside you. Professor Agnieszka Piotrowska is undoubtedly the latter.

Having Professor Piotrowska as my Director of Studies was genuinely life-changing. She was one of my greatest supporters throughout my PhD journey, encouraging me when I needed it while never shying away from the difficult truths that would ultimately help me grow.

Her passion for knowledge is infectious, but what makes her truly exceptional is her commitment to her students. She sees potential, nurtures it and challenges you to go beyond the limits you may have set for yourself. Her mentorship extended far beyond helping me complete my PhD; she prepared us for our vivas, job interviews and, importantly, for life within academia.

Now, as a lecturer myself, I have an even greater appreciation for the extraordinary level of time, care and dedication she gives to her students. She does not simply supervise research; through her teaching and speaking she develops researchers, academics and people."

– Dr Charmaine Kundai Dambuza, Senior Lecturer, University of East Anglia
