Wired magazine, The Guardian newspaper and School Community Leaders and Policy Makers across the country have described Nick as a ‘man on a mission’. He has been listed as one of the top 100 global edtech leaders by the influential Hot Topic group and was recently endorsed for a TED Fellowship by both Sir Ken Robinson and Professor Sugata Mitra whose TED talks inspired his work.
Now a well-known advocate for creativity in education, business and society, Nick has a background in technology, creativity and communication and a Master’s Degree in Electronic Engineering from Loughborough University, but says he’s “just a dad” who is concerned about our children’s and all our futures.
After a career which kicked off in the early days of interactive learning he was a founding figure in the world of digital media before moving into marketing and business innovation. His life and career trajectories were changed forever by becoming a father, Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talk, reading half of a book by Prof Guy Claxton and coming across a bunch of creatives in a field at a festival all of which inspired him to walk the talk.
He co-founded STEAM Co. as a social enterprise with other parents in his sons’ school to ‘help connect our kids with their dreams, their passion, their art – and our communities with their schools and has worked with schools across the country from Cornwall to Carlisle.
‘Rocket Boys’ is a million selling book his father found in an Oxfam book Shop and which Nick has been given permission to take into schools as a half day session. It is a story of 4 boys growing up in a dead end coal mining town in the USA in the 50's, who see the first Sputnik and, with the encouragement of a teacher and mother, go on to make rockets and work for NASA. Nick follows this up with a rocket making/firing workshop for a class. At the end of the day the whole school community is invited in for a real rocket launch. The response to this session has been phenomenal.
‘Rocket Kid Stories’ is Nick’s first book - a collection of short, ten-minute reads about inspiring men and women to encourage parents to read with their children. The first print has nearly sold out with schools buying a copy for every pupil to take home.
