Helen Butters

Helen Butters

Helen will tell her incredible story of how four friends and their boat - Rose- took on one of the world's most gruelling sporting challenges. A two-month race across the Atlantic that has defeated even the toughest athletes. Theirs is a story that will encourage everyone to do extraordinary things!

Helen Butters is a Sunday Times Bestselling Co-Author, keynote speaker, communications & engagement expert, qualified performance coach with NLP, and a member of the National Council of Psychotherapists.

In 2016 she followed her dream of rowing across both the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean with a team of 3 amazing women and gained a Guinness World Record and an Honorary Doctorate. A lot of people ask Helen how she coped with the level of endurance rowing, 2 hours on and 2 hours off 24 hours a day. What got her through, was a positive mindset and understanding how to keep it that way, in times of immense stress.

Adventure and managing life have many similarities. Helen uses her row across the Atlantic as a backdrop, and adopts a unique, interesting, and amusing approach that sets her apart from many motivational speakers. Helen is extremely relatable as she’s not a professional athlete: she’s a mum with a busy career who has many barriers that could have stopped her from undertaking a big adventure. Helen has many examples of how attendees have been inspired to look at life using new perspectives, and become more attentive to their own talents which in turn has caused many to leave her talk feeling prepared and motivated.

She has appeared on several television programs such as The One Show, BBC Breakfast, This Morning and Good Morning Britain. She is an Ambassador for Maggies Yorkshire and an Ambassador for the British Inspiration Trust (BRIT)

Helen recently swapped 40-foot waves for the Pyrenees as her recent adventure this year saw her cycling 1200 miles through 4 countries over 14 days from Maggie’s in Leeds to Maggie’s Barcelona. Helen and her team raised awareness for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres as well as over 58K for Maggie’s Yorkshire.

Testimonials from Teachers

"This week, Helen shared her story of 4 Mums in a Boat at Avantor Sciences, a global partner to customers on the life sciences industry, by way of a Microsoft Teams call. In attendance were over 80 associates from 12 different countries across the globe, many of whom were non-native English speakers. First of all, throughout the organisation of the event Helen was extremely responsive and happy to meet more than once prior, to ensure a smooth run on the day. On the day there were no technical difficulties and Helen was prompt, professional and prepared with Slides and Video clips to support the story. When it came to the story and its delivery, our audience was captivated and any language barriers were broken down by Helen’s down to earth, honest narrative and the visuals she had prepared. We always survey our attendees for these sessions and the response was 100% positive. The common themes in our feedback were “Motivation, Inspiration, Positivity, Teamwork and Resilience” and of course, a “fantastic event”. For many people this was their favourite Speaker yet and many were inspired to go away, learn more about the adventure and think about what their metaphorical ocean might be. The level of engagement was further emphasised by the number of questions once Helen had finished the presentation and she answered them enthusiastically. Thank you Helen for such an inspiring talk, it truly was a great event enjoyed by everyone who attended."

In March we invited Helen Butters, from Yorkshire Rows to come to speak to pupils from years 5 - 11 about her experiences rowing across the Atlantic and also about her forthcoming bike ride from Leeds to Barcelona, for Maggies Cancer Care Centre. Not only was Helen very well received by our audience, she was motivated and really drove home the message about the importance of determination and resilience.Helen's high energy and enthusiasm was amazing and deeply infectious. You will not be disappointed when hiring Helen for your next event. She was inspirational! So much so we've invited her back again to speak in July.

It was such a marvelous experience for the children to be able to hear the truly motivating story of 'Four Mums on a Boat'. From the initial reading of a book to the mental and physical training, to passing exams and up to the final challenge itself, the children were totally enthralled in the adventure. It was encouraging for the children to hear how success can be achieved through courage, resilience, and a dedication to a specific goal. The children were extremely inquisitive as to the mental strength involved when not only embarking on a challenge, but also such an adventurous challenge. Similarly, the children were fascinated by the teamwork demonstrated throughout the story, and the importance of each individual having equal determination and ambition to thrive and succeed. The ultimate takeaway message was that life experiences do not stop when you get older, it is never too late to begin a new journey and experience. The year 5 children at Roundhay Primary are truly grateful to have heard of this real-life example of dreaming and achieving.

– Louise Hellam, Roundhay School

"The event was wonderful. Helen was great and I now have lots of mums and members of staff of a certain age seeking out their oceans! She was inspiring and I think struck a chord with all sections of our audience."
