Steve Clare

Teach, don't preach - harm reduction through PSHE education.

This is Steve's 14th year supporting secondary schools, 6th Forms & colleges with elements of their PSHE curriculum, namely harm reduction lessons on alcohol and other drugs. Although based in the Southwest, he delivers lessons across the country. Steve is available from October to late May only.

Combining a professional teaching qualification with over 20 years licensing experience (15 years managing bars and nightclubs). Steve's background provides an unusual insight into the subject matter addressed. He continues to run bars at specialist licensed events and has volunteered with drug testing services in the UK and USA. This generates huge credibility & kudos among students & teachers alike.

Using credible, evidence-based information & research alongside his professional experiences, Steve aims to promote harm reduction through age-appropriate drug education. He neither supports or condones under-age drinking or those who use drugs.

Lessons are highly engaging, honest, relevant & continually updated. They empower pupils to make informed choices about their health & well-being without preaching. Steve is quick to establish a relaxed, but professional atmosphere where questions can be asked freely without judgement. As a sole-trader he is flexible in meeting the individual needs identified by a school.

His lesson portfolio also includes youth produced sexual imagery (sexting - KS3 & 4), healthy lifestyle choices (KS2 & 3) & cyber bullying (KS3 & 4).

In terms of CPD, Steve attends relevant conferences, webinars and training, and is a member of the newly formed Drugs Education Forum. Specific training enabled Steve to spend more time in 2023 with DanceSafe in Detroit. (DanceSafe – a USA peer-based, harm reduction organisation promoting health & safety and drug checking within the electronic music community). May 2024 saw time spent with a newly formed Michigan-based harm reduction charity, testing drugs using reagents & a spectrometer.

Beyond teaching, Steve is a Level 2 FA coach, coaching youths from KS1 to KS4. Since 2015, he has worked at a boy's summer camp in New Hampshire, USA, where he is Head of Archery (a certified American Archery Association Level 2 instructor) and a soccer coach. Travelling the USA before and after camp means he's only available for bookings from October to late May. A lover of electronic dance music, Steve also DJ's, playing vinyl sets only.
