Louise Matthews

Every child can learn mathematics and has the right to do so!

Louise is the author of the storybook series 'Martha the Mathemagician' which provides a shared positive experience that will help put to bed mathematics anxiety, and open eyes to the wonderful world of mathematics. Martha lives on Calculation Island (where numbers grow on trees) and when her magic calculator flashes, she keys in the secret code whichtakes her to where someone is having a mathematical problem which she helps them to solve.

In collaboration with Spot On With Numbers, she has developed an early intervention programme which contains everything you require to guide children in developing early number sense. Furthermore, it includes research-based support for learners with dyscalculic tendencies and strategies for improving working memory.

She has over 30 years’ experience in education as a teacher, senior leader, primary mathematics consultant, school improvement adviser and primary strategy manager. She was head of Every Child Counts for over ten years where she developed mathematics interventions for children struggling with mathematics and trained consultants to deliver them to schools. She is currently working at the University of Oxford where she is research project manager on two programmes: Working Memory and Arithmetic and Mathematical Reasoning in Year 2.

Louise runs her own business ‘Mathematics Counts’ which provides INSET, twilight and staff meetings to develop teaching and learning in all aspects of mathematics for primary schools including the Lesson Study approach to staff professional development.

She can offer you workshops in schools for teachers, teaching assistants, parents, or governors. She can work with children in the classroom or in assembly on mathematics or on being an author. She is also available for talking at conferences and events.

She was born and still lives in Wakefield, West Yorkshire where she enjoys tap dancing, tai chi and weekends away in her campervan ‘Poppy’.
