Cat Weatherill

Cat Weatherill

Madly in love with reading and writing.

Let’s talk about literacy...

Can you persuade children to read in their free time? Can you make them care more about their writing?

You can if you are passionate about such things, and Cat has the kind of passion that could make a penguin want to fly! She is madly in love with words, spoken or written. She loves the potency of metaphors and the poetry of life. She weaves her own life story into her presentations, showing how a girl from the backstreets of Liverpool used her love of stories to become an international performer and best-selling author.

Her enthusiasm is infectious, irresistible, magical, and potent. She shows children worlds which are theirs for the taking – but only if they can read and write! She offers presentations and creative writing/story workshops to fire up imaginations, boost creativity and ignite literary dreams. She promotes the art of journaling to underpin well-being and positivity in students.

Who is Cat? She is a best-selling Puffin author and one of Europe’s leading storytellers. She travels the world, performing at major festivals and writing about her adventures as she goes. Often she works with the British Council to promote storytelling abroad, working in international schools and colleges from Kazakhstan to Saudi Arabia. She has been a professional Artist in Education for twenty five years, working with thousands of children in hundreds of schools.

Creative writing workshops for juniors include her ever-popular ‘Quest’ workshop, which explores narrative structure through an Arthurian model. The workshop is a lesson in clear reasoning, debating, collaboration and the acceptance of others’ ideas, as several creative options are (unexpectedly) reduced down to one. The boardroom meets the classroom!

For teens, Cat prefers to work with able writers, to raise their game and boost their confidence. Workshops include Painting with Words: How to create shimmering multi-sensory images with cinematic appeal and A Passion for Poetry.

Testimonials from Teachers

"Cat is one of our great storytellers, vivacious and inventive"

– Michael Morpurgo, Author of War Horse and Private Peaceful

"Last year you visited our school. Since then you inspired me to read. Now my mum has to tell me to STOP reading and go to sleep. But when she leaves the room, I carry on reading."

– Amelia, St Joseph’s Primary School, Sutton Coldfield

"Thank you for making me more interested in books because I did not really like them. But now I like them a lot"

– Charlie, The Mosley School, Burton on Trent

"I have again booked Cat for a further six events during March to May, and will always make sure that I have enough money in my budget to be able to bring her to Swansea. She has left the children and the adults, who have been lucky enough to see her in action, totally mesmerised. She brings humour and knowledge to everything she does. Brilliant! Fantastic! I really can’t enthuse over her enough."

– Carole Billingham, Children and Youth Librarian, Swansea Library HQ
